Biography Joshua Jerry

POET. WRITER. SPEAKER. CAMPAIGN AGAINST CANCER

Destiny Story

My destiny story started before I was born. God predestined greatness over my life. When my mother was eight months pregnant with me, a relative attacked her but she miraculously escaped. My great maternal grandmother Agutu, was struck dead by lightning leaving behind my grandmother Rosa, a maternal orphan at three months of age. My maternal grandfather was a cook in the British colonial farms. My grandparents were poor. My parents were poor. When I was born in very tough beginnings, I was determined to break the generational curse of poverty!

Childhood Story

I was born in a double room of a mud-walled house in a small village called Pawteng’ in Kenya. One room was a bedroom for my parents while the other room was a sitting room During the day but a “bedroom” during the night for me and some of my siblings. The other siblings would sleep in the smoky kitchen in the backyard. Growing up, we didn’t have the most in life materially. However, our parents gave us the most precious gift in life- The Power of Prayers. We converged every evening to pray together as a family. My dad kept a prayer register. Whoever missed prayer sessions without permission would face untold repercussions. My father’s strictness and my mother’s prayers have been essential to moulding me into the person I am today. I was bedridden for four months when I was seven years old. I had a mysterious boil on my right thigh. I was always sickly as a child.

Education

I studied in the village, primary and secondary schools. At Pawteng’ Primary School, class/grade four, we sat on stones and placed books on our laps to write. The mud classes were doorless, windowless, and broken walls. We still made it! The same story continued at St. Augustine R.C Kandege Secondary School…then, there was no water at school- we bathed in the river, did laundry at the river, and drew untreated water for drinking. There was no electricity- we studied using pressure lamps and candles. There was no dining hall- we took our meals under trees. There was no library- we still made it! I graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Arts, Political Science, and Sociology, Upper Second Class Honors. Additionally, I’m a CPA six graduate, having been the best Student Countrywide in a unit of KASNEB Examinations.

Publications

I’ve published three books that are part of the syllabus in schools and universities across the
Republic of Kenya. The books are;

  1. LIVING THE DREAM- Motivational Poetry
  2. IN PURSUIT OF FREEDOM- Life-Changing Poetry
  3. POWER OF THE MIND

Campaign Against Cancer

I draw my passion for the campaign against cancer from personal life experiences. I’ve lost three uncles to cancer and a close friend to cancer. When I watched my uncle Jerry Okungu die of prostate cancer, it pierced my heart like a sword. I stayed with him for some months before he passed on. I was by his deathbed at the hospital a few minutes before he crossed over to the land of spirits. I left his deathbed for a few minutes when he was in an oxygen machine and when I came back, I found him already dead and wrapped in white at the morgue. I went outside and cried. We can beat cancer if we go for regular cancer screening and give all kinds of support to cancer patients. My main goal in life is to build a fully equipped cancer facility, the biggest in Africa.
